Original photograph of British soldiers at the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt, circa 1915-1922

This documentary photograph captures a group of four soldiers riding camels, accompanied by local guides, with two of the most emblematic monuments of antiquity in the background: the Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops). The image illustrates one of the most widespread experiences of British soldiers stationed in Egypt during the First World War, when a visit to the Giza plateau had become almost a ritual for troops in transit or recuperating.

From 1914 onwards Egypt was one of the principal logistical bases of the British Empire in the Near East. From here were directed the operations for the defence of the Suez Canal, the campaigns in the Sinai Peninsula and Palestine, and the supply of the troops in Mesopotamia. Hundreds of thousands of British, Australian, New Zealand and Indian servicemen passed through Cairo, and the many photographs taken in those years became visual testimony to the encounter between the imperial army and the monumental landscape of ancient Egypt.

The composition is characteristic of period tourist photography, but it also possesses an undeniable documentary value. The soldiers pose in a solemn manner, while the Egyptian guides, dressed in traditional costume, underline the encounter between the British colonial world and the local culture. In the background, the profile of the Great Sphinx and the imposing mass of the Pyramid of Cheops are clearly visible - iconographic landmarks that turn the photograph into a historical document with strong symbolic value.

The photograph is mounted in an original passe-partout and preserved in an oak frame painted black, elements indicating that the image was intended from the outset for display in a home or a military club. The generous size of the photograph (20 × 26.5 cm) distinguishes it from the usual photographic postcards and suggests a commission from a photographic studio in Cairo or Giza.

From a collector's point of view, photographs of this kind are prized because they bring together three fields of interest: the military history of the First World War, Egyptology and British colonial photography.

State of preservation

  • a well-preserved photograph, with contrast still very good;
  • slight yellowing of the mount, normal for the age of the piece;
  • original oak frame, with minor wear consistent with its age;
  • an authentic and attractive ensemble for display.
