Original photograph on unmounted photographic paper, showing a large Austro-Hungarian infantry formation drawn up for a military inspection at the front during the First World War. At the centre of the composition is a senior officer on a white horse, accompanied by staff officers, while another officer salutes the formation. The disposition of the troops and the open character of the ground indicate a military ceremony held in an area of operations.
The photograph is of particular documentary interest for capturing a moment of transition in the equipment of the Austro-Hungarian army. Within the same formation one can observe both men wearing the traditional headgear used at the beginning of the conflict and soldiers wearing the new steel helmets introduced during 1916, including examples of German inspiration (Stahlhelm M16) issued to some Austro-Hungarian units before the widespread adoption of the M17 model. This detail is an important chronological marker and illustrates the process of modernisation imposed by the experience of trench warfare.
On the verso survives a manuscript inscription in Hungarian, written in pencil and partly illegible, from which the year can be made out 1916, an element that supports the dating of the photograph. The absence of other annotations or stamps suggests a photograph intended for private use or internal documentation rather than for commercial distribution.
The print measures 17,5 × 24,5 cm, printed on thin, unmounted photographic paper. The state of preservation is as shown in the images: slight yellowing typical of its age, small stains and handling marks, slightly worn corners and a few edge defects, none of which affect the legibility of the scene.
