James Greig (1861-1941), nvitation to the annual ball of the Yorick Club in 1904, pen and ink drawing.

Greig was born in Arbroath, Scotland (1861). In 1891 he went to London to study art, continuing his education in Paris between 1895 and 1896. Back in London, he produced black-and-white illustrations for publications such as Punch and The Sketch. He wrote art criticism for the Morning Post, edited the diaries of the landscape painter Joseph Farington (1747-1821) and published articles on Gainsborough and Raeburn. Elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1898, he was renowned for his Middle Eastern landscapes and for his views of Oxford. He designed posters for the Union Castle Line and P&O.
