Berber terracotta vessel painted with geometric and foliate motifs – North Africa (the Maghreb), 19th century (possibly earlier).

Provenance: Algeria or Morocco
Dimensions: height 22 cm, diameter maximum 12 cm
Material: terracotta (fired clay), decorated with natural pigments

A domestic vessel, hand-made, with a round body and a tall neck fitted with two symmetrically placed handles joining the shoulder of the vessel to the upper part of the neck. The vessel is made of a porous, yellow-ochre body characteristic of North African utility pottery and is decorated with geometric motifs painted in reddish brown and black. The ornament, arranged in horizontal registers over the upper part of the body, consists of parallel bands, zigzag lines, series of dots and branching motifs (stylised plant symbols).

The decoration is concentrated on the upper part of the body and on the neck of the vessel, while the base remains plain, though marked with a painted sign in the form of an "X" within a circle, visible on the underside. This mark could represent a workshop sign or a protective symbol, frequently found in rural Maghrebi pottery, where the utilitarian and the apotropaic overlap.

The form, the technique and the decorative style indicate a belonging to the Berber pottery tradition, preserved in the rural regions of the Maghreb into modern times. The technique of painting with natural mineral pigments applied to an unglazed surface is characteristic of the traditional women's workshops in mountain villages (for example the Kabylie region in Algeria or the Atlas areas of Morocco).

The object was probably used for storing liquids (water, milk, possibly oil), its function being combined with decorative and symbolic value in a domestic setting. The traces of wear and the flaking at the base confirm long use, and also the authenticity of the piece as a functional rather than purely ornamental object.
