Putti in an Allegorical Garden Scene

Tempera on parchment, England, 18th century
Unsigned, undated
Dimensions: 14 × 18 cm
State of preservation: as shown in the photographs

The work is an allegorical scene executed in tempera on parchment, showing two putti in a garden landscape of classical inspiration. The composition belongs to English decorative painting of the eighteenth century and falls within the iconographic repertoire of allegories drawn from emblem literature and from the French and British engraved models of the rococo period.

At the centre of the image is a youthful figure, shown on a monumental plinth with arms flung wide, while a second, winged figure kneels at its base in a gesture of devotion or homage. Although the wings of the figures are only discreetly suggested in this composition, their identification is confirmed by the existence of the companion piece, in which the same figures appear with wings and one of them explicitly carries the bow and quiver of arrows, the established attributes of Amor (Cupid). The two works must therefore be read as pendants belonging to the same allegorical cycle.

The scene does not illustrate a specific mythological episode but uses the symbolic language characteristic of eighteenth-century decorative art, in which putti (or genii of love) embody abstract ideas such as love, fidelity, virtue or the triumph of the emotions. Placing one of the figures on a pedestal gives the composition a ceremonial character, suggesting an allegorical exaltation of love, while the ordered garden, the cypresses and the architecture in the background evoke the idealised world of European aristocratic parks.

Technically, the work is executed with precise drawing, well-defined outlines and a delicate palette dominated by tones of blue, green, pink and brown. The stylised vegetation, the simplified perspective and the decorative treatment of the landscape reflect the influence of the ornamental engravings that circulated widely in England during the 18th century and served as models for miniatures, tempera on parchment and illustrations intended for collectors.

The parchment support, of good quality, together with the careful execution indicates a work intended for a cultivated setting, probably made to be mounted in an album or framed as a decorative piece. The absence of a signature is characteristic of a considerable number of British decorative works of this period and does not affect the artistic or documentary interest of the piece.

The state of preservation is good given the age of the object. The parchment has a natural patina, slight oxidation spots and small traces of wear at the edges, without significant losses to the paint layer. The colours have kept their freshness and the composition remains clear and harmonious.

The work comes from an allegorical pair executed in the same manner and on the same type of support.
