Complete set of mounts for an Orthodox Gospel book - the Risen Christ and the four Evangelists, silvered brass, Romanian lands, circa 1800-1840.

The set comprises five decorative elements intended for the binding of a liturgical Gospel book: a central oval medallion with a representation of the Resurrection of Christ and four ornamental corner pieces decorated with medallions of of the four Evangelists. The pieces are made of embossed brass sheet, subsequently silvered - a technique frequently used in church silversmiths' workshops when solid silver was not employed.

The central element (20 × 15 cm) represents the Risen Christ, with a cruciform halo and the banner of victory, emerging from the tomb. The composition is framed by a broad radiant aureole executed in repetitive relief, a decorative motif characteristic of the Orthodox repertoire of the 18th and 19th centuries. The iconography is close to the liturgical representations found on the mounts of Romanian Gospel books, where the scene of the Resurrection symbolises the triumph over death and forms the centre of the iconographic programme of the cover.

The four corner pieces (17 × 12 cm each) bear oval medallions with the traditional representations of the Evangelists, each shown in the act of writing the sacred text and accompanied by his iconographic symbol:

  • Saint Matthew – the angel;
  • Saint Mark – the lion;
  • Saint Luke – the ox;
  • Saint John – the eagle.

The border is formed of rich baroque foliate scrollwork, drawn from post-Brâncovenesc ornament, struck from a die and finished by hand with chasing. Decoration of this type remained in use over a long period in the workshops of Bucharest, Buzău, Râmnic, Iași and Neamț, which makes attribution to a precise centre difficult.

The natural patina, the wear to the silvering and the small fixing perforations confirm long liturgical use. Minor distortion of the sheet metal and localised losses of the silvering can be seen, consistent with removal from the original volume and with the age of the objects. The state of preservation can be described as good to very good, with no significant structural fractures.

From an artistic and historical point of view, the set is an authentic example of Romanian ecclesiastical decorative art, illustrating the adaptation of Western pressing and embossing techniques to the Byzantine iconographic programme of the Orthodox Church.
