      Lettered below impression: "M.A. Bonaroti è marm. Doedeins d." and with De Bisschop's monogram: ''JE f.'' (Nagler III.2254). Numbered in top right corner: "15".

• Curator's comments

  This etching is a copy in reverse after a sculpture by Michelangelo in the S. Pietro in Vincoli, 'Tomb of Julius II'.The only difference with reality is the pedestal which is trapezoidal. According to the inscription in the etching, De Bisschop used a drawing by Doedijns as a prototype, however, this one has not been traced yet.

  This etching is one from a series of 25 etchings 'Paradigmata Graphices variorum artificum'; first published in The Hague in 1671.
