Galeriile Karo ShopOriginal photograph of the Piatra Corbului sawmill, Romania, circa 1920-1940. Photograph on late albumen or gelatin silver paper, mounted on its original card, photograph 17.5 × 23.5 cm.
The image captures the industrial complex of the Piatra Corbului sawmill, one of the primary timber-processing plants set in the mountainous region of the Carpathians. The main building bears the inscription „Ferăstrăul Piatra Corbului”, which allows the subject to be identified beyond doubt. In the foreground are extensive stacks of sawn timber and dressed beams, sorted by grade, while numerous workers are caught going about their daily tasks, giving the photograph a remarkable documentary value for the organisation of labour in the Romanian forestry industry.
The composition illustrates all the stages of the technological process of a large period sawmill: the storage of the logs, their cutting, the drying and stacking of the timber, and the handling of the finished products. In the background stretches the coniferous forest that provided the raw material for the operation, underlining the integration of the industrial plant into the mountain forest landscape.
Architecturally, the complex retains the characteristics of the wooden industrial buildings put up in the first decades of the 20th century, with generous volumes, pitched roofs and wide openings for moving timber. The image offers valuable information about the infrastructure of the Romanian forestry industry in the interwar period, an economic sector then undergoing intensive development and oriented towards both the domestic market and export.
The state of preservation is good for a period utility photograph, with only wear at the edges of the backing card and small surface defects visible, without affecting the legibility of the image.
